CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A large fire followed by multiple explosions at a building in suburban Detroit killed one person and injured a firefighter. Authorities believe canisters containing gas chemicals may have been responsible for the repeated explosions reported by first responders and witnesses. The building housed a distributor for the vaping industry called Goo, and canisters stored inside contained nitrous and butane, said Clinton Township Fire Chief Tim Duncan. Owners and employees are cooperating with investigators, said Clinton Township Police Chief Dina Caringi. Clinton Township officials asked residents to stay away from the site and said it would be fenced off and guarded as cleanup begins.

A teenager in Michigan was struck and killed by a flying butane canister from an explosive fire at a vaping distributor’s warehouse about a quarter mile away on Monday night, the authorities said. The 19-year-old man, who was not identified, was among several people injured from chunks of metal that the force of the explosion projected as far as a mile away, Mark Hackel, the county executive in Macomb County in Eastern Michigan, said in an interview. The fire, which began shortly before 9 p.m. on Monday, filled the night sky with flames and smoke, prompted the police to urge residents to avoid the area and left a trail of charred debris along 15 Mile Road, a highway in Clinton Township, Mich.“You could see the amount of fire just coursing in the sky, and the explosions were actually shaking the car,” Tim Duncan, the chief of Clinton Township’s fire department, said in a news conference on Tuesday morning.

Rite Aid filed plans to close 154 stores on Monday as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Rite Aid is the smallest of the three major drugstore chains, well behind CVS and Walgreens. Rite Aid was expected to close stores as part of its bankruptcy. Rite Aid told Insider that it considers a variety of factors when deciding to close a store, "including business strategy, lease and rent considerations, local business conditions and viability, and store performance." "We will also strive to transfer associates to other Rite Aid locations where possible," the company said.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally at Drake Enterprises, an automotive parts manufacturer, on September 27, 2023 in Clinton Township, Michigan. Donald Trump on Friday blasted his upcoming New York civil fraud trial and his four pending criminal cases as he asked supporters to donate to his 2024 presidential campaign before a key finance deadline. "Democrats are seeking to bring down the world-famous 'Trump Tower' and impose what some are calling 'the corporate death penalty' upon me," the email said. "The trial could begin as early as Monday." The campaign raised $35 million in the prior quarter.

The New York civil fraud trial of former President Donald Trump and his company is back on track to start Monday after a state appeals court lifted a temporary stay of the case. Trump, the Trump Organization and his two adult sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, are accused by James of misstating the values of multiple real estate assets. That argument stemmed from a separate appeals court decision in June, which removed Ivanka Trump as a defendant in James' case. The appeals court said in that ruling that the specific allegations involving her related to matters that fell outside a six-year statute of limitations. James' list shows she plans to call 28 witnesses, including Trump, Donald Trump Jr. , Eric Trump and Ivanka Trump.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during an autoworker-focused campaign rally at auto supplier Drake Enterprises, on Sept. 27, 2023 in Clinton Township, Michigan. Trump, the front-runner among Republicans in the 2024 presidential race, many times encouraged the UAW to endorse him during the roughly hour-long speech. The sides failed to reach tentative agreements by an 11:59 p.m. Sept. 14 expiration of contracts for 146,000 UAW members with the Detroit automakers. Currently, about 18,300 UAW members with the Detroit automakers are on strike, with the union warning of additional strikes without substantial progress in the talks by Friday.

Outside the Trump rally, small groups of Trump supporters waived flags along a main road, while closer to the factory where the former president will speak was a small drumline with Trump supporters waiving flags nearby. "Auto Workers for Trump" and "Union Members for Trump" signs were being handed out to attendees and MAGA hats were prevalent in the largely white, older male crowd. Brian Pannebecker, a retired auto worker who runs a Facebook group called "Auto Workers for Trump, said he assisted in getting current and retired auto workers to the event for the Trump campaign and expects more than 200 people at the event. The venue where Trump will speak is an auto parts production facility, which allows little room for the stage or a large audience. Hundreds of chairs were set up in front of where Trump will speak, with bleachers meant for auto workers on the far left and far right of the stage.

[1/8] Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump addresses auto workers as he skips the second GOP debate, in Clinton Township, Michigan, U.S., September 27, 2023. "Donald Trump is lying about President Biden's agenda to distract from his failed track record of trickle-down tax cuts, closed factories, and jobs outsourced to China," Biden's campaign said in a statement while Trump spoke. The UAW has to date not backed either presidential candidate, making it the only major union not to endorse Biden. The UAW leadership has welcomed Biden's support, however, and spoken about Trump and his record in scathing terms. Promising to end the government's EV push if elected, Trump urged the UAW to back him in the presidential race.

The union is pushing for higher wages, shorter work weeks and assurances from the country’s top automakers that new electric vehicle jobs will be unionized. The dueling appearances reflect what will likely be a chief dynamic of the 2024 general election, which is increasingly looking like a rematch between Trump and Biden. Trump has tried to capitalize on the strike to drive a wedge between Biden and union workers, a constituency that helped pave the way for the ex-president’s surprise 2016 victory. While Biden has not implemented an electric vehicle mandate, he has set a goal that half of all new vehicle sales be electric by 2030. He’s set to hold a press conference to highlight Trump’s “false promises to blue collar and union workers in Michigan and across America.”___AP Auto Writer Tom Krisher in Van Buren Township, Michigan, contributed to this report.

Nearly as soon as the United Auto Workers went on strike earlier this month, Biden voiced support for the workers. Wearing a UAW ball-cap and speaking through a bullhorn, Biden’s overt support for the striking workers was a break from his predecessors’ attempts at neutrality. Biden was invited by the UAW to join their picket line, and has spoken out forcefully in favor of the workers. Trump, who is not planning on joining a picket line, will speak instead at a non-union facility. Speaking at the picket line on Tuesday, Fain praised Biden for being the first president to join a picket line.

President Joe Biden is expected to visit a picket line Tuesday in the Great Lake State following a public invitation Friday from UAW President Shawn Fain. UAW members Niko Shinn (front) and Darius Collier (back) walk a picket line on Sept. 25, 2023 outside a Mopar facility owned by automaker Stellantis in Centerline. Fain has appeared with the independent senator from Vermont in Washington, D.C., and during a recent UAW rally in Detroit. Trump led Biden 46% to 43% among union members in an August survey, after Biden led Trump 51 % to 42% in June, according to Bernie Porn, president of EPIC·MRA. "With union members, he has been so supportive of just about everything that union members want.

The UAW, which on Friday cited "real progress" in talks with the No. In contrast to Ford, the UAW has expanded strikes against General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler-parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI) to 38 parts distribution centers across the United States. The UAW began unprecedented, simultaneous strikes on Sept. 15 at one assembly plant each of the Detroit Three after the prior four-year labor deals expired. The strikes at additional GM and Stellantis facilities on Friday added about 5,600 workers to the 12,700 previously on strike. Stellantis temporarily laid off 68 employees in Ohio last week and expects to furlough another 300 workers in Indiana because of the strike.

[1/2] Republican candidate for Michigan Secretary of State Kristina Karamo campaigns in Clinton Township, Michigan, U.S. November 4, 2022. Democratic President Joe Biden narrowly won Michigan, Arizona and Nevada in 2020 and Trump and his allies have falsely claimed that the results were fraudulent. As of Wednesday, States Action United said 13 election deniers had won a statewide role in election administration in 9 states, while 24 election deniers had lost races in 17 states. The races in Michigan, Arizona and Nevada are particularly important because they are key battleground states. Ahead of Tuesday's elections, Biden accused Trump of inspiring Republican election denier candidates and warned voters: "Democracy is on the ballot for all of us."
